Danske Bank A/S is the largest bank in Denmark and one of the leading financial institutions in northern Europe with about 250 branches, 2.7 million personal customers and 19,500 employees. Danske Bank Group is organized in four business units: Personal Banking, Business Banking, Corporates & Institutions and Wealth Management. The Bank’s core activity is retail banking. It also provides asset management, investments, pension, mortgage finance, insurance, brokerage, real estate and leasing services. In Norway, Danske Bank (formerly Fokus Bank) serves about 230,000 customers through 28 branches with headquarters based in Trondheim. In Finland, Danske Bank (formerly Sampo Bank) has approximately 1 million personal customers and 90,000 business and institutional customers. In Sweden, it operates about 40 branches and six financial centres. In Northern Ireland, Danske Bank is one of the leading retail banks with over 46 branches and four finance centres. It is also one of the four commercial banks in Northern Ireland which are permitted to issue their own banknotes. Danske Bank was established on October 5, 1871 and is headquartered in Copenhagen. In 2005, it acquired National Irish Bank and Northern Bank. In 2006, it acquired Sampo Bank, the third-largest bank in Finland. The acquisition also included activities in Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia as well as operations in Russia. As of September 30, 2017, the company had total assets of DKK 3.548 trillion (US$563 billion), customer deposits of DKK 923.4 billion and loans of DKK 1.726 trillion.
