Banco Popular Español, S.A. (Banco Popular) was founded in 1926 and is one of the five largest banks in Spain in terms of total assets and deposits. Banco Popular offers wholesale and retail banking services through a network of about 2,000 branches (170 of which in Portugal), Mundocredit offices and around 2,500 ATMs. Banco Popular Group consists of a controlling company (Banco Popular Español), two foreign banks (Banco Popular Portugal, and Totalbank in Florida, USA) and four domestic banks (Banco Pastor, Popular Banca Privada, Targobank and Bancopopular-e). The Bank also has 3 collaboration and 14 representative offices in Italy, Germany, France, Poland, Switzerland, the UK, Shanghai, Dubai, Morocco, Chile, Mexico, Dominican Republic and the United States. The Bank’s five regional subsidiaries Banco de Andalucia, Banco de Castilla, Banco de Credito Balear, Banco de Galicia, and Banco de Vasconia were fully absorbed by parent company in 2008. In 2010, the Group signed a strategic alliance with Crédit Mutuel for the provision of joint services to customers in their main strategic markets (France, Germany, Spain and Portugal) by setting up a new banking platform with over 120 branches and over 500 employees distributed across Spain, in which each institution has a 50% stake. In 2012, Banco Popular Español completed the acquisition of 100% of Banco Pastor, the second oldest bank in Spain established in 1776. As of September 30, 2016, Banco Popular had total assets of EUR 156.632 billion, loans and receivables of EUR 105 billion and total equity of EUR 14.991 billion.
In June 2017, Banco Santander, S.A. acquired 100% of the share capital of Banco Popular Español.
