CatalunyaCaixa was formed on 1 July 2010 by the merger of CAIXA CATALUNYA, CAIXA TARRAGONA and CAIXA MANRESA, three institutions closely linked to their territories. The company provided a wide range of personal and business financial services to over 4.2 million customers. It offered current and savings accounts, term deposits, business deposits, personal and mortgage loans, trade and professional loans, credit cards, online banking, investment funds, pension plans as well as insurance services such as home insurance, accident insurance, health insurance, vehicle insurance, life insurances and buried insurance. It also offered short term and long-term financing, treasury management, collection and payment management, securities services and more. With over 8,000 employees, the company operated through a network of more than 1,050 branches in Catalonia and over 320 branches in the rest of Spain with a strong presence in Madrid, Valencia and Murcia. At the end of 2010, the Bank's total assets amounted to 76.6 billion euros and the total capital amounted to 5.2 billion euros with capital ratio of 10.7%.
In July 2011, CatalunyaCaixa transferred its banking business to a newly established banking entity, Catalunya Banc, S.A. In July 2014, BBVA (Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria) agreed to purchase nationalized Catalunya Banc, S.A. for 1.19 billion euros.
