Banco Compartamos, S.A., Institución de Banca Múltiple (or Compartamos Banco) is the biggest microfinance bank in Latin America with more than 2.9 million customers and over 410 service offices in 29 states in Mexico. 98% of the clients of Compartamos are women. Banco Compartamos is the main subsidiary of Gentera S.A.B. de C.V. (formerly Compartamos, S.A.B. de C.V.). The Bank provides consumer loans to low-income individuals, credits to micro entrepreneurs and small business owners as well as working capital loans. It offers credits to women in groups from 10 to 50 members for investment in their business, merchant credits to groups of 4 to 20 entrepreneurs men or women and business credits. It also offers home improvement loans, savings accounts and insurance services including life insurance (Seguro de Vida) and Integral life insurance (Seguro de Vida Integral). All clients with Crédito Mujer (Women Credit) receive a free life insurance. The Bank’s clients are involved in a variety of economic activities, such as food trade, handicraft production, consumer products and clothing and farming. The average loan size is approximately US$450. Compartamos Banco was created in 1990 as NGO and was transformed into a commercial bank in 2006. In 2001, it became the first microcredit lender in the world to issue debt in the capital markets. The company was named Best Microfinance Bank in Mexico by Latin Finance Magazine. As of March 31, 2017, it had total assets of MXN 28.558 billion (US$1.6 billion) and total loans of MXN 24 billion (US$1.3 billion).
