The Nasdaq Stock Market (NASDAQ) is the largest electronic equities exchange in the U.S. and the second largest stock exchange in the world by market value. It is owned by Nasdaq, Inc. (formerly NASDAQ OMX Group), a holding company incorporated in 1971. The company provides products and services through four segments: market services, listing services, information services and technology solutions. NASDAQ is an electronic exchange and has no physical trading floor, but it makes all its trades through a computer and telecommunications system. At September 30, 2016, The NASDAQ Stock Market has about 2,870 listed companies with a market capitalization of approximately $8.3 trillion, and the Nasdaq Nordic and Nasdaq Baltic exchanges with Nasdaq First North, have over 870 listed companies with a market value of approximately $1.3 trillion.
History
NASDAQ was founded in 1971 and originally was the acronym for "National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations". When the NASDAQ began trading in February 1971, it was the world's first electronic stock market. In 2006, NASDAQ completed its separation from the NASD and began to operate as a national securities exchange. In 2007, NASDAQ merged with OMX, a Scandinavian exchange group and officially became The NASDAQ OMX Group. In 2007, NASDAQ OMX acquired Boston Stock Exchange (changed name to Nasdaq OMX BX) and Philadelphia Stock Exchange (changed name to Nasdaq OMX PHLX). In 2015, The NASDAQ OMX Group changed its name to Nasdaq, Inc.
