ING Direct Canada (ING Bank of Canada) was a direct retail bank based in Toronto. It was the largest foreign-based lender in Canada after HSBC Holdings. The company operated through call centres, the internet and ING Direct cafés. The Bank’s products included personal and business savings accounts, checking accounts, mortgages and mutual funds. ING Group commenced operations in Canada in April 1997. As of June 30, 2012, ING Direct Canada had approximately 1.8 million clients, 1,100 employees and about US$40 billion in assets. In November 2012, Bank of Nova Scotia completed acquisition of ING Direct Canada from ING Group for CAD 3.1 billion. In 2014, Scotiabank rebranded its ING Direct unit as Tangerine.
