Standard Chartered plc (LSE: STAN, SEHK: 2888) is a universal bank providing deposit, credit, trust, and investment services to a wide range of retail, business, and institutional clients. It is listed on the London, Hong Kong and Mumbai stock exchanges and ranks among the top 20 companies in the FTSE-100 by market value. As of January 5, 2017, it had a market capitalization of US$28 billion. Despite its British base, Standard Chartered does not provide retail banking in the United Kingdom and 90% of its profits come from Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Standard Chartered has operations in about 70 countries and serves customers through a network of more than 1,100 branches and over 5,000 ATMs in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and North and Latin America. In the United Sates, the Bank serves multi-national corporations, financial institutions and development organizations through offices in New York, Newark, San Francisco, Houston, Miami and Washington. Standard Chartered Bank was created in 1969 through the merger of two banks, the Standard Bank of British South Africa (est. 1862) and the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China (est. 1853). In 2009, Standard Chartered acquired the First Africa Holdings. In 2013, it acquired the South African custody and trustee business of Absa Bank. As of June 2016, the company’s total assets amounted to US$661 billion.
